Re: “” Jan. 3 Fred Hiatt column.

To educate children to be innovators, manufacturers, professionals, artists, engineers, and all in-between, families must have K-12 options besides neighborhood shopping and paying tuition bills. And a child’s education should never be decided by the spin of a lottery wheel.

That is why I support Betsy DeVos for secretary of the U.S. Department of Education. She looks past policy platitudes like shrinking class sizes. Instead, DeVos’ efforts dramatically increased the number of charter schools in Michigan and increased accountability for school performance.

Sen.Michael Bennet recognizes the increased education access that a strong charter school community brings. In 2014, he co-sponsored the Expanding Opportunity through Quality Charter Schools Act. I supported and worked for his re-election because of his strong education reform record.

I urge Bennet to support and confirm DeVos as U.S. secretary of education.
