Residents of a downtown apartment building have had run-ins with transientsentering the building prior to Thursday morning’s possible “make my day” killing of a what may have been a homeless man, a tenant said.

Colorado Springs police said the victim, whose name has not been released, entered the three-story home at 219 N. Wahsatch Ave. a little before 7 a.m. He was confronted by a tenant, who police said shot the intruder. The man was taken to the hospital “with obvious trauma from a gunshot wound,” where he died, police said.

No arrests have been announced.

Ryan O’Connell, who lives in one of the apartments in the house, said he was awake early and heard a commotion in the basement.

No charges filed after homeless man’s death in December ruled a homicide in self-defense
“All I hear is him (another tenant) screaming, ‘Get out, get out,’ and I’m sitting there, I’m like, ‘What the (expletive) is going on?” O’Connell said,

Dressing, O’Connell said he heard his neighbor “counting down, five, four, three, two, and one, he shot him.”

O’Connell said he frequently sees homeless people around the building and on the property, but he’s seen people inside before, too.

“We have lighted our entire area here and we have security cameras going down both streets and the alleyway as well. I’ve had multiple things stolen out of my yard. Refrigerators, three bikes, multiple things. Itap not the best part of town,” neighbor Terrance Maccommons told KKTV.
