Re: “” Jan. 18 news story.
While I cannot speak to the estimated cost to remodel bathrooms in state mental health hospitals, I can speak directly to the devastation of losing a loved one to suicide in a mental health facility. My sweet, funny, loving but troubled sister committed suicide in a Pittsburgh mental health facility in July 1990. Eighteen hours after she had been admitted to the facility, she hung herself from the shower head in her bathroom using a sheet from her bed.
The threat of suicide by shower head in mental health facilities is real. It is my hope that funding is allocated and these bathrooms are repaired. I miss my sister every day; nobody else needs to experience this type of loss.
