Re: “,” Jan. 25 news story.

Yourarticle provided good background information on a complicated issue, but did not adequately present the potential consequences of Senate Bill 5, Handgun Safety Training for School Employees. Sen. Chris Holbert is disingenuous when he says, “This is not a gun bill, but a training bill.”

The bill sets no standards for training; it merely allows a sheriff to provide safety training to staff who already have concealed carry permits. It also allows school districts to set a maximum number of staff who could carry concealed handguns in a public or charter school. Where now one or two teachers might be armed and trained as security personnel, there could be dozens.

Would this really make our students safer? The article points outthat a gun attack in a rural school is unlikely, so why introduce the possibility of having students exposed daily to the known risks of having guns in their schools?
