: Jan. 26 news story.

Sen. Andy Kerr’s bill to permit bicyclists to pass through intersections without stopping under certain conditions (the “Idaho stop”) is not the answer to improving road safety for either the cyclist or automobile driver.

I live in Boulder County, where the cyclists rule the roads. With more and more traffic congestion increasing almost daily, it is very difficult to continually be watching for bicycle riders in bike lanes who do not obey the rules.

Although Sen. Kerr may think that “Cyclists can hear and see much better than somebody in a car,” your picture on the front page of Friday’s Denver Post is clear evidence that the young woman with her hat pulled down over her ears, cords dangling from her earphones, and fur-trimmed collar on her jacket obstructing her side views cannot be considered to be riding in a safe manner. She is also not wearing a helmet.

I would hope that this bill will soon be voted down.
