WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Aurora, on Monday called a travel ban issued Friday by President Donald Trump an “embarrassment.”

During a brief interview Monday at Reagan National Airport, Coffman said, “I certainly would agree with the president that Islamic terrorism is a real threat to our national security.

“But I think the policy was poorly thought-out and badly executed and I think it’s just an embarrassment,” he said. “It seemed that it was more crafted by campaign operatives than national security experts.”

Coffman, like , has joined a growing list of Republican lawmakers critical of Trump’s travel ban, which which targets several predominantly Muslim countries and created chaos at airports nationwide — including Denver International Airport — as passengers were detained and protesters rallied to their defense.

Coffman represents a rapidly-diversifying suburban Denver district with a large African-born immigrant population.
