A closer look at the recruiting battle in the Pac-12, with rankings and signing numbers from Scout.com:
1. USC
No. 5 nationally, 25 signees, four five-star, 13 four-star recruits
The Trojans signed five-star players at wide receiver, running back, offensive tackle and defensive tackle, giving versatility to a top-five class for the defending Rose Bowl champions.
2. Oregon
No. 16, 24 signees, nine four-star recruits
Willie Taggart used a strong late push to put together an impressive class that should help the Ducks bounce back from a puzzling losing season in 2016. Cornerback Deommodore Lenoir should boost a pass defense that was among the worst in the Pac-12 last season.
3. UCLA
No. 21, 18 signees, two five-star, seven four-star recruits
Jaelan Phillips, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive end from Redlands, Calif., is the top-ranked player in the country, according to various recruiting services, and he’ll have a chance to make an immediate and major impact for the Bruins.
4. Washington
No. 23, 18 signees, 10 four-star recruits
Hunter Bryant, the 6-3, 240-pound tight end who ranks second at his position nationally, should provide a nice target for quarterback Jake Browning as the Huskies aim to continue the momentum created by a berth in the College Football Playoff.
5. Stanford
No. 24, 14 signees, three five-star, six four-star recruits
The Cardinal struggled to pass the ball last season, depending heavily on running back Christian McCaffrey, the former Valor Christian star, to carry the load. So Stanford signed the top-ranked pro-style quarterback in Davis Mills out of Norcoss, Ga.
6. Colorado
No. 29, 27 signees, four four-star recruits
The Buffs went heavy on offensive lineman. Pomona’s Jake Moretti is the gem of the group, but athletic 6-4, 342-pound guard Casey Roddick from Ventura, Calif., was a late addition to the class who figures to be a key cog going forward.
7. Utah
No. 33, 20 signees, six four-star recruits
Javelin Guidry, a 5-foot-10 cornerback out of Murrieta, Calif., who runs a 4.35 40-yard dash could help the Utes immediately.
8. Washington State
No. 39, 27 signees, four four-star recruits
Connor Neville, the top-rated quarterback out of the state of Oregon, will have a year learning under talented senior Luke Falk before he gets to enter the QB race for the Cougars.
9. Oregon State
No. 43, 23 signees, two four-star recruits
Jake Luton, a 6-6 quarterback who transferred from Ventura Community College, should have the chance to compete for the starting job.
10. Arizona State
No. 44, 18 signees, seven four-star recruits
The Sun Devils signed the country’s second-ranked kicker in Brandon Ruiz. He’ll have big shoes to fill as he replaces Zane Gonzalez, who last season set the NCAA career record for field goals made.
11. Arizona
No. 46, 25 signees, one four-star recruit
Nathan Tilford, a 6-1, 200-pound prospect out of Ontario, Calif., has a chance to play in several different places for the Wildcats.
12. California
No. 64, 15 signees, two four-star recruits
Quarterback Chase Garbers out of Newport Beach, Calif., figures to get a chance to win the starting job vacated by Davis Webb.
