A suspected carjacker who held police at bay Wednesday evening in the Cherry Creek North shopping district for about four hours surrendered peacefully to police.

The incident, which started about 2:45 p.m., created traffic problems and street closures in the area, affecting businesses and residences.

The suspect, shut inside a dark-colored SUV at East Third Avenue and Josephine Street, did not cooperate with police, despite being surrounded by SWAT members armed with rifles. The man was alone. Police did not say whether he was armed.

Police used a negotiator at the scene, which transitioned from day to night as temperatures in the 30s dropped into the lower 20s. Light, freezing precipitation began after sunset.

Police closed East Third Avenue from Clayton Street to University Boulevard. Northbound traffic was not allowed on University at East First Avenue. Other roads in the area also were shut down.

Armored police vehicles were used at the standoff, which began near East Third Avenue and Columbine Street.

Roads, businesses and residences reopened at about 7 p.m. after the suspect surrendered, police said.
