After Chaparral wrestling coach Rocky Johnson lost his job last week in the wake of , Joey Massay, who previously served as the program’s junior varsity coach, has been appointed as interim head coach. Douglas County School District public information officer Paula Hans confirmed the hire on Monday afternoon.
The video, filmed by parent Andrew Stubbs at practice on Jan. 27, depicts Johnson encouraging a prank called “The Ultimate Sit-Up.” Johnson was initially suspended after Stubbs brought to the video to Chaparral administration, and then was out of a job last Thursday following a meeting with the wrestlers in which he addressed the video and its release.
District officials said they are meeting with parents at various times to discuss the incident. Regionals are this weekend, with the state tournament to follow from Feb. 16-18 at the Pepsi Center.
