FORT COLLINS — The Mountain West has largely been a parity-driven league this season, with half the teams separated by just two games in the standings.
But when it comes to Colorado State, the Rams have actually been quite predictable, at least against inferior opponents.
CSU continued its trend of taking care of business with a wire-to-wire 69-52 win over Utah State on Tuesday night at Moby Arena, improving to 7-0 against the bottom four teams in the league. The Rams have now swept the regular season series with eighth-place San Jose State, ninth-place Utah State, 10th-place Air Force and last-place UNLV.
“That’s kinda been our M.O. ever since I’ve been a coach,” CSU coach Larry Eustachy said. “If you go through the history of all the games I’ve coached, we usually beat the teams that we’re favored against. That’s a big part of a season — you’ve got to win the games you’re supposed to.”
Eustachy’s team has now won five of six to improve to 16-9 overall and 8-4 in the MW. The Rams are just a half-game behind first-place Boise State (8-3) despite playing with just seven scholarship players since Jan. 21.
“I said it at the beginning of the year: We’ve got a chance to win it,” Gian Clavell said. “We’ve got seven good players that can get the job done. And we’re in good shape, so that’s not an issue.”
