An inmate at the Weld County Jail who was found “unresponsive” in a cell was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The inmate, who was not identified, was found at about 1:45 p.m., according to a Greeley Police Department news release.

Deputies performed CPR, and the inmate was taken to the North Colorado Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead by emergency room staff at 2:41 p.m., according to the release.

The inmate had been booked into the jail within the past week on a variety of criminal charges, police said. He was alone in the cell in a medium-security unit.

An investigation is ongoing and the county coroner’s office will determine the cause of the man’s death.
