I haven’t been affiliated with a political party for many years and I’ve never been a Democrat. But as I watch and listen to American liberals lately, I have to say — and this pains me a lot — that they really are changing how I look at the world. As someone who has long felt quite confident in my views, the mind-opening that Democrats have offered me is surprising, and most unwelcome.
Letap start with politics: Throughout the campaign season, I didn’t have much nice to say about Donald Trump and, at the risk of alienating many within my radio audience, I announced publicly that I did not vote for him.
But since President Trump’s election, and particularly since his inauguration, the venom and bile directed toward him, the mindless obstruction of his nominees by Senate Democrats who do not understand their constitutional role in the process (hint: it is not co-equal with the presidentap role), the endless attacks by self-righteous Hollywood leftists and late-night talk-show hosts, the overwhelming media bias against Trump has left me no choice but to support, even cheer, him almost each day since he moved into the White House.
Defending Donald Trump makes me feel a little dirty, but not nearly as dirty as I’d feel if I let these vicious representatives of “tolerance” get their way.
Thanks for nothing, Democrats.
I have never been a New England Patriots fan. Itap probably the smugness of their fans more than anything else, and it didn’t help that they temporarily exported Josh McDaniels to Denver. But when tens of thousands of liberals shared a sportswriter’s column arguing that “Tom Brady has some explaining to do on Donald Trump,” insisting that one guy who has known another guy for many years should “expect to get some tough questions” about their friendship, Democrats actually pushed me toward rooting for Brady and the Patriots in the Super Bowl.
For the record, I stayed “Boston Strong” and rooted for the Falcons, which didn’t work out all that well emotionally. But, as a Broncos fan, the fact that I wasn’t much more upset that the Patriots won another Super Bowl, thanks to Democrats making me reconsider how I look at the world, makes me feel even dirtier than standing up for Trump.
Thanks for nothing, Democrats.
And finally, I know almost nothing about women’s couture. I don’t care about Ivanka Trump’s fashion brand, which I’m told is composed mostly of nice-looking, good-quality clothes available at an affordable price. Sounds good to me.
Last week, Nordstrom announced that they would stop carrying Ivanka Trump’s clothing and shoes. The next day, Neiman Marcus dropped her jewelry line. A few online companies soon followed suit. So much for supporting women. The stores claimed that Ivanka’s products weren’t selling well. Color me skeptical.
And how about the idiocy of liberals boycotting Ivanka, the only liberal with real influence over the president of the United States? I disagree with almost every public policy position Ivanka has uttered, her acceptance of the wage gap myth and support of government subsidies for child care. And now I have to encourage people to support her in order to push back against the leftap petty tyrants.
Standing up for Ivanka doesn’t make me feel nearly as ill as it does to stand up for her dad or for Tom Brady. But my changing view of each is the result of the mind-broadening brought to Americans daily by the mindless vicious petulant bullying of the tolerant left.
Thanks, Democrats, for making me question my beliefs. Thanks, Democrats, for nothing.
