Sunday marks the 75th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and lead to the internment of 120,000 Japanese Americans in 10 camps across the West, .

This year’s event has more political clout than normal given the new administration’s focus on immigrants from Muslim-majority countries, a focus that  back in November when ideas for a Muslim registry and ban were first being floated.

For the annual Day of Remembrance ceremony, prolific author and UCLA’s Asian American studies professor Lane Hirabayashi will give a presentation on the post-war resettlement of Japanese Americans, particularly in Colorado. An audience discussion led by KUSA anchor Adele Arakawa will follow.

The event is free and will be held at the History Colorado Center at 1200 Broadway from 1-3 p.m Sunday, Feb. 19.
