Interview with Tom Roth, volunteer co-manager

Q: How did you get involved in this business?
:I started as a shopper, then volunteered one day a week, and after my retirement I have increased my volunteering to two plus days a week.

Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: There are no paid employees, only volunteers, and we benefit Children’s Hospital. Consignors love us because we sell their things and shoppers love our shop because of scheduled markdowns. All profits go to the hospital. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved. Consignors  don’t know the value of their things, but we do, and we find customers who want their things. It’s an upscale antique shop featuring china, crystal, jewelry, rugs, art and furniture all at a minimum of $20. We’re so in demand, that consignors must make appointments to consign, and with three or more appointments a day, it usually takes consignors two months to get in.

Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
:Everyone enjoys working in the shop, consigning and shopping. Ultimately, Children’s benefits. We give a lot to the hospital. Over $4,000,000 so far since the beginning. Each year sales just continues to grow.

Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
:To continue upgrading merchandise and increase our monthly donation to Children’s.

Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
:There are no paid employees, we are all volunteers.
