A man broke into a home near downtown Colorado Springs on Thursday night and shot the homeowner’s dog during the robbery.
The encounter happened about 8:30 p.m. on the 700 block of East Vermijo Street. The victim told police the suspect entered his residence, pulled out a gun and demanded money.
“The victim said his two dogs were present at the time,” police said in a news release. “The suspect shot one of the dogs while demanding money.”
Authorities say the victim handed over what he had and the suspect fled on foot. A police K-9 tried to track the suspect but was unable to locate him.
The wounded dog was taken to an emergency animal clinic by the victim. The victim was not injured. The dog’s condition is unavailable.
The suspect is approximately 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs about 180 pounds. Police say he was wearing all black clothing, including a black beanie, and was armed with a silver, semi-automatic handgun.
