A search for an overdue climber in the Elk Mountains of Pitkin County turned up a snow cave, possibly used by the climber, but the man was not found.
Ryan David Montoya, 23, was reported overdue before 9 p.m. Sunday, according to the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office. Montoya, originally of California, was climbing in the Pyramid Peak area, south of Aspen. Pyramid Peak has a summit of 14,026 feet.
Members of Mountain Rescue Aspen, in extreme weather conditions Monday afternoon, found “a snow cave possibly used by Mr. Montoya,” the sheriff’s office said.
Search efforts will resume Tuesday morning.
