
The Summit County coroner recorded a 82 deaths in 2016, according to the office’s annual report. That’s down slightly from 2015’s record 87 deaths, but still a significant increase from the 60 deaths in 2014.
More than half — or 42 people — who died in Summit County last year were visitors. Cardiac-related issues were the most common cause of death, Coroner Regan Wood said. High altitude can be difficult on the body’s circulation system and in several cases, the deceased had been cleared by their own doctors to travel to high elevations.
The county also recorded 13 suicides.
So far in 2017, 13 people have died in Summit County. That includes two skier deaths and one case where the cause hasn’t been determined. The other 10 deaths were ruled accidental.
