New Mastersounds and Avenhart are our picks for the best shows around Denver this week. See you there, and if you don’t make it out, follow our music musings on and our selfies on . If you do, mind where .

New Mastersounds

Friday nights don’t have to be complicated, especially when there’s a world-renowned funk band in town. The New Mastersounds hails from England, but for anyone who’s come unstuck in time following a tangential bass line at a jazz club or used a stranger to mop the sweat off their face at a funk show, its sound is universal. As its proved over the course of ten studio albums, the four-piece was made for the floor. Denver’s in particular: Not only is the band a regular mainstay around the city, but founding member and guitarist Eddie Roberts recently moved to town. Catch the band at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom on March 10 and 11. Tickets are $22-$25 via .

Avenhart

Each semester, the University of Colorado at Denver’s CAM Records champions a local band to teach its students the hustle of putting on a concert. A heartwarming story, sure, but this year’s seldom-heard signee, Avenhart, would be worth seeing without it. Frontwoman Andrea Pares commands a gorgeous folk bellow, not to mention a five-piece string section that sounds like a backwoods Appalachia equivalent of an orchestra pit. The band will mark its first-ever EP with a release show at Lost Lake Lounge on March 16. Bonus: Every ticket comes with a physical copy of the EP. Double bonus: Tickets are just $10-$13 via .
