A 38-year-old man died after falling and hitting his head as he ran from Englewood police.

An officer arrested Michael Trujillo on March 5, at South Federal Boulevard and South Decatur Street. “While in custody, the subject attempted to escape by running,” according to a news release. “A foot-pursuit ensued and the subject fell, striking his head.”

Trujillo died of complications of traumatic head injuries, according to the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office. The manner of death is still pending investigation.

The officer involved in the fatal foot chase has been placed on administrative leave, which is normal protocol in such cases, Englewood police Sgt. Chad Read said.

Read said he could provide no more information about the in-custody death because the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is investigating.

Denver paramedics transported the man to Swedish Medical Center. He died of his injuries March 9.
