Greeley considers cuts to cope with $500,000 expense due to minimum wage increase

Nearly 100 seasonal jobs mostly done by Greeley youth won’t be on the chopping block next year if the Greeley City Council has anything to say about it.

What Greeley will do instead to balance its budget after Colorado’s minimum wage increases hit remains to be seen. The council at its Tuesday work session heard an update on the potential impacts of the Colorado minimum wage increases approved by Colorado voters in November.

The minimum wage is $9.30 per hour this year, and will increase to $12 per hour by 2020. Beyond that, the wage will increase for inflation annually. But minimum wage-related increases are just part of the overall impact, as city officials are eyeing raises for staff members who make slightly more than minimum wage, citing morale issues.

The result, for Greeley, is a near-$500,000 impact annually by 2020, with the majority of that coming under the city’s parks and recreation department and its seasonal lifeguards, sports officials and others. Greeley has 750 seasonal hourly staff.
