
Rockies 5, Giants 1, at Scottsdale Stadium
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — , the outfielder/first basemen who made his major-league debut last season at age 28, is making making a lot of noise this spring. He went 2-for-3 with an RBI double Friday night in the Rockies’ 5-1 victory over San Francisco.
“You can’t say enough about how he’s hitting,” manager Bud Black said. “He’s squaring balls up against all types of pitchers and he’s playing with a great deal of intent to try and make this ballclub.
“When you are having the at-bats he’s having … they way he’s taking pitches, it’s impressive. The collective at-bats are very, very good.”
Cardullo is hitting .364 with 12 RBIs, including two grand slams for a 1.061 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging).
For starters: Left-hander Harrison Musgrave, a darkhorse candidate for the rotation or possibly a bullpen role, pitched three crisp innings, allowing no runs and one hit while striking out two. It was his first Cactus League start and he performed well.
“I wanted to mix things up and follow (catcher ) around the plate,” Musgrave said. “I threw three pitches well tonight (fastball, slider, changeup) and kind of kept them off-balance.”
Hits:龱-Ի pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two. … Leadoff hitter rapped out two singles and is hitting .476.
Misses: Right-hander Zach Jemiola, optioned to Triple-A earlier in the day, pitched fairly well, but he gave up a double, a single and run to the Giants in the seventh, ending the Rockies’ chances of a shutout.
