A popular dog park in Jefferson County, which became a after dog owners failed to pick up and dispose of dog poop, will be mostly off-limits to allow clean up and restoration.

On April 4, 99 of 107 acres of the Elk Meadow Park Dog Off-leash Area in Evergreen will be shut down, according to a Jefferson County Open Space news release.

A newly-fenced, eight-acre off-leash site will temporarily remain open to the public, provided dog owners clean up after their pets.

Jefferson County Open Space held three community meetings, between January and March, on the . The meetings included a proposal to move the eight-acre site to the east side of the park near the accessible Waggin’ Trail.

Tom Hoby, open space director, said the goal is to provide a space for dogs to run free while also protecting water quality, improving the visitor experience and ensuring trail access.

Open space and community partners are looking for a long-term off-leash site. Once a new site is found and opened, the eight-acre site will be closed indefinitely to allow the entire 107-acre area to be restored.
