The Denver Pioneers didn’t have to look far to find someone new to helm their women’s basketball program.

Jim Turgeon was announced Tuesday as the 10th head coach of the Pioneers, leaving his position at CSU-Pueblo.

“We were striving to find someone with a strong sense of community and someone who would be a strong cultural fit for the University of Denver and we found that person in Jim Turgeon,” Peg Bradley-Doppes, vice chancellor for athletics and recreation and RC operations, said in a news release. “Jim’s win-loss record is spectacular and he has always done it with great integrity and class. He has overachieved everywhere he has been. He is a passionate teacher of the game of basketball who embraces everything that the University of Denver stands for.”

In his two seasons with the Thunderwolves, Turgeon compiled a 54-10 record. His team set a program record with 28 wins this past season, surpassing the 26 wins CSU-Pueblo had the year before. He was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

Turgeon takes over for Kerry Cremeans, who was . Last year, the Pioneers finished with a 6-24 record, which included 3-14 in conference play, second to last in the Summit League.

“I’m honored by the confidence that Peg Bradley-Doppes has in me to lead this program,” Turgeon said in a news release. “I was blown away the athletic administration’s vision for not only the women’s basketball program but the entire University of Denver division of athletics.”

Prior to CSU-Pueblo, Turgeon had stops at Iowa Western Community College and Dodge City Community College.
