Interview with Gloria Staebler and Dave Bunk, owners
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
:Dave has been a dealer in minerals and mining antiques for many years, and Gloria has published a mineralogical monograph series and run an online bookshop specializing in natural history publications since 2001. When the opportunity presented itself, the two decided to open Lithos a retail book, mineral and fossil shop .
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
:We are internationally known dealers with decades of experience, thus Lithos is no ordinary “rock shop.” The shop is a unique opportunity for local beginners and established collectors to connect with the aesthetic of the scientific and high-end collector communities. We can help begin and build a meaningful mineral and/or fossil collection and can offer advice to customers about achieving their objectives and helping them share and enjoy their collecting experience. The shop is new and is constantly expanding its reach. We are building a fluorescent room which will showcase a different local jewelry artist each month. We also hope to begin offering workshops in the summer.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
:We love learning about and sharing the natural world.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
:Finding the time to bring all that we dream about the shop to fruition.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
:Mineral and fossil collectors tend to be very bright and are often a little “nerdy.” find our shop a welcome refuge — a chance to casually look through a microscope, work a puzzle, read a book, do dinosaur origami or experiment with optics. Lithos is a great place to hold geology-themed scout events or even birthday parties.
