It looks convincing. announced the signing of former NFL wide receiver Randy Moss to play goalkeeper.

“Renewing my career is something that I’ve thought about for a long time now,” Moss said in the news release. “I’m excited to get started with the Charlotte Independence and show the world that I can be a two-sport athlete.”

The post included a video introducing the club’s new “40-year-old rookie,” wearing a No. 84 jersey, who then spoke at a news conference.

“Hey, I don’t know too much about y’all’s sport,” Moss tells his new “teammates” in the video. “But, y’all see I got these gloves in my hands, so ya’ll kick it too hard, they gonna get blocked.”

Charlotte is the Colorado Rapids’ affiliate club in the second-tier United Soccer League. Moss was not listed among Charlotte’s goalkeepers on its roster. Only Cody Mizell, who suited up for Colorado in its season opener as Zac MacMath’s backup, and Kyle Renfro are listed.

A spokesman for the Charlotte Independence said Friday to check the first letter of each sentence in the club’s release when asked if the Moss signing was for real.

The March 31 hoax was all a ploy to promote the USL club’s season opener Saturday, April 1 against the Charleston Battery.

Apparently Rapids’ starting goalkeeper Tim Howard doesn’t have to worry about his job security any time soon.
