Re: April 2 Greg Dobbs column.

I just wanted to comment on one statement in Greg Dobbs’ otherwise terrific column on the home opener this week for the Colorado Rockies. Forty years ago, the term “Colorado Rockies” did not just mean the mountains, as Dobbs wrote. It was the name ofthe new NHL hockey team that had moved to Denver from Kansas City. Who could forget Don Cherry, Lanny McDonald, Barry Beck, the “Swedish Sieve,” and that generally woeful team that deserted then-new McNichols Arena in Denver to become the New Jersey Devils? Well, woeful except the second season when they actually made the Stanley Cup playoffs. Nevertheless, they were Denver’s first NHL team and,if they had ever had reliable financing and some coaching stability, who knows? Then the“Colorado Rockies” might still be the name of Denver’s NHLhockey team and the “Colorado Avalanche” might still be Denver’s professional soccer team!

Greg Dobbs said just what I have been trying to tell my anti-baseball friends. The beauty of the sport is that there is no clock, and we true fans don’t need new rules to shorten the games by 10minutes.
