Interview with Tanys de Mesa, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
:It was kind of a hidden talent. When I was 19, I started working with a florist at Albertson’s, and she taught me some basic things, and then I took it and ran. I left there and started working with another florist at her flower shop until I decided to open my own. It’s one of those things that you don’t know you can do until you try it, like a cake decorator who’s never decorated a cake before.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
:We offer a much more customized experience than larger, corporate flower shops because, with us, flower arrangements are artwork. We treat every piece like art instead of something routine or regular, and I have a lot of things that you can’t get anywhere else in terms of quality and originality for both flowers and gifts.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
:I get to express my creativity and I usually get to make somebody’s day while doing it. I don’t have they type of job where you deliver bad news to people. I always make them happy and there’s nothing better than that.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
:I’m a perfectionist and I don’t like to disappoint my customers. I guess the biggest challenge is always meeting everyone’s expectations including my own. I want people to know that they chose the right place, so we always try to blow them away with our work.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
:If you can dream it, we want to make it happen. Whether it’s a service or a product we will try to deliver it perfectly every time. We want to help every customer realize their vision for flower arrangements, and we go above and beyond to make sure that unique, trendy gifts are always on hand. We want to be that place where customers say, “I can only get that at Flowerbox.”
