The Boulder City Council moved closer on Tuesday evening to making a decision regarding proposals for improvements to Canyon Boulevard — with the main focus being the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
The city is in the early stages of making improvements to Canyon Boulevard between Ninth and 17th Streets. Staff started off with 10 possibilities and have narrowed them to seven and now three.
Each option includes two vehicular lanes in each direction. While there has been concern about decreasing the drive time in the area — especially with regard to public transportation — the primary concern revolves around safety.
Councilwoman Jan Burton posed the question that while the city is an advocate for cyclists and pedestrians, drivers might wonder who is looking out for them. “I’m concerned this would increase the time it takes a car to get through the area,” she said. “That is what people are telling us they are pissed off about.”
