A boy was wounded in a shooting Thursday afternoon in Aurora on the same block as Overland High School and Prairie Middle School.

The shooting happened about 2:30 p.m. on the 13000 block of East Jewell Avenue. That’s just east of South Peoria Street.

Aurora police says a suspect ran away.

The shooting did not happen on school grounds, authorities said, but rather in nearby Jewell Wetlands Park.

Tustin Amole, spokeswoman for the Cherry Creek School District, says five schools — including Overland and Prairie — were placed on secure perimeter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. That status has since been lifted.

Further information, including if the wounded boy or suspect are students at the nearby schools, was not immediately released. Police also did not release the wounded boy’s condition.
