A 15-year-old boy who was in Aurora near Overland High School was treated at a hospital and released the same day.

Aurora police say they still don’t know who is responsible for the shooting, which happened just before 3 p.m. at Jewell Wetlands Park on the 13000 block of East Jewell Avenue. No arrests have been announced.

Sgt. Chris Amsler, an Aurora police spokesman, said authorities are looking into whether the shooting has a gang connection. He said the shooting happened during an argument between the boy and several other teens or men.

“An altercation broke out. A gun was produced and the juvenile was shot in the chest,” Amsler said. “When we got on scene we found him and he was actually talking and responsive.”

The wounded teen was taken to a hospital, treated and released on Thursday afternoon. “I would say it’s probably his lucky day,” Amsler said.

“We don’t have any other details on what caused this, any suspect information,” Amsler added. “Our victim just hasn’t provided us with that information at this point.”

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Aurora Police Department’s gang intervention unit at 303-739-1990.

Tustin Amole, spokeswoman for the Cherry Creek School District, says five schools — including Overland and Prairie — were placed on secure perimeter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.

It’s unclear if the boy is a student at any of the nearby schools.
