Firefighters have made steady progress on the Turkey Track 7 fire in southern Douglas County, containing 85 percent of the wildfire by 4 p.m. Thursday.

The fire and has consumed about 40 acres, according to the U.S. Forest Service. It’s burning about nine miles north of Woodland Park on the perimeter of the 2002 Hayman Fire.

Dead trees — burned in the 2002 Hayman Fire — are still standing so crews are allowing the interior fuels to burn off naturally to avoid added danger. Smoke will likely be visible for several days.

Four engines and three hand crews were on scene Thursday with Arizona and New Mexico crews assisting local firefighters.

The area, including the target shooting along Forest Road 343, is closed to public access at least through the weekend.
