FORT COLLINS — You have to give a guy a moment to dream.

With what Preston Williams has shown at practice, Nick Stevens deserves at least that much.

“I could just imagine going four wideouts, him and Mike (Gallup) on the outside, Bisi (Johnson) and Detrich (Clark) on the inside,” Stevens, Colorado State’s quarterback, started. “That’s deadly, and I think we could definitely use him. If I could petition that, or give him somebody else’s jersey and let him play, that would be the move.”

Williams, the transfer wideout from Tennessee, is not eligible to play this season under NCAA rules. Not that one could tell from the way the 6-foot-5, 209-pound target has gone about his routine during spring camp.

He’s active, physically and vocally. He’s inquisitive with his fellow wideouts and his quarterbacks, and he is pushing not only his fellow pass catchers to be better, but the guys who are covering them.

It is not a stretch to say Williams will have an impact on the Rams this season without playing a down.

“He can go out there and you want to compete against good football players every chance you get,” CSU head coach Mike Bobo said. “Not just on Saturdays, and I think that’s why its important. I always talk about recruiting and building the depth is competition. We don’t have enough of that here. We don’t have it at enough positions, we don’t have enough guys that love football. He loves football, he enjoys playing. I think that’s the competition that’s going to be consistent throughout the fall from him against our guys.”
