DENVER — A state committee has determined that Colorado’s corrections agency should have done more to inform victims of the Aurora theater shooting that James Holmes was transferred out of state to serve his life sentence.
KMGH-TV reported last week after he was attacked by another inmate. The state says it cannot disclose where Holmes is now being held because of an agreement with other states to transfer offenders that requires inmates’ new locations remain secret.
The Victims Rights Act subcommittee called on the Department of Corrections to improve its system for notifying victims of inmate transfers.
The action came in response to complaints from family members of victims killed in the 2012 attack.
The department has agreed to update its victim notification policies.
