Members of a suddenly shuttered Longmont kickboxing gym are fighting for refunds after the local owners refused to reimburse them for paid-for classes and calls for help went unanswered.
The local franchise of New York-based I Love Kickboxing, closed March 31 after being open just shy of a year. An email from Erie-based owners John and Kelly Keller sent to members four days earlier said the gym was closing due to “unforeseen circumstances.”
“This is not something we expected to do,” read a copy of the email obtained by the Camera. “We know that many of you will understandably be upset about this. After much deliberation, this decision is the hardest one we have ever had to make.”
The Kellers did not respond to multiple requests for comment at the business phone number and email addresses.
Several members had purchased “punch cards” — pre-paid memberships good for 65 classes — that cost $700. But when they asked the Kellers for refunds on the remaining classes, they were told the cards were not refundable. Rather, they would be transferred to another I Love Kickboxing franchise.
