Earth Day is coming up Saturday so grab your gardening gloves and sustainable water bottle — you may want to throw in a protest sign, too.
Although an annual occurrence, Earth Day has caused a big stir this year as it’s the day scientists and science lovers across the country have planned to take to the streets in a March For Science.
But that’s not all that’s going on. Here are some free events Saturday — and one Friday — that range from politically-motivated marches and rallies to garden shopping and disc golf.

There are a handful of local marches corresponding with the national March for Science day. The march aims to defend the role of science in health, safety, economies and governments. Organizers of the D.C. march say the national event was spurred out of “an alarming trend toward discrediting scientific consensus and restricting scientific discovering.” (If anyone happens to have a)

The event, hosted by the city, will focus on sustainability-related resources available to Denver residents. Among city agencies, including Denver Energy Challenge, Denver Recycles and Sustainable Neighborhoods Program, will be outside exhibitors, including the Environmental Protection Agency, Denver Food Rescue and Tesla.

LoDo Cares is kicking off its annual clean-up efforts on Earth Day. Gloves, tools and clean-up material will be provided. Volunteers should complete and release and waiver liability. Register for the kick-off event on .

The second annual block party by the Congress Park Neighbors Green Team will have music, food, art, games and prizes. It will feature hands-on exhibits about pollinators, recycling, composting and other green initiatives.

Gardeners can check out a plant sale benefiting , which provides donated medical supplies and equipment to developing countries. People can also paint watercolors on plantable seed paper.

The Sierra Club is hosting a festival downtown that will include music, speakers, food trucks and breweries. At 12:45 p.m., the group will circle the Capitol to rally for environmental justice.

The university is hosting a variety of events all week, including an animal petting circle on Friday from 12-2 p.m. The week-long events culminate Saturday with various artists and vendors in the Boettcher Commons, food trucks and a beer garden (starting at 11 a.m.) in Lot 3, and a keynote speech by 16-year-old climate change activist and hip-hop activist Xiuhtezcatl Martinez at 12:05 p.m. at the Dayton Memorial Library steps.

UNC is also hosting a week-long series of events, including presenting a 14-foot by 14-foot cube Tuesday, with resource conservation partner McKinstry, that represented a one-eighth of a carbon ton. Saturday will be a frolf (disc golf) tournament.

Lakewood’s event includes live music from local artists, including Avenhart, Rob Drabkin and A-Mac & the Heights. There will also be fitness activities, such as yoga, zumba and TRX suspension training, as well as demonstrations, such as bee keeping, seed starting and composting. There will also be a beer garden, food trucks and a climbing wall.

Colorado Springs’ Office of Sustainability will host the Sustainafest Block Party at its Sustainacenter, 702-704 E. Boulder Ave. The community celebration of Earth Day will feature the opportunity to learn about sustainable practices through various demonstrations and activities as well as live music, local food trucks and family friendly activities.

Location: Bear Creek Park
Approximately 1,500 volunteers will converge on work sites from as far north as Monument and south to the Town of Fountain to clean parks, trails and waterways at 23 locations throughout the Pikes Peak region. Saturday’s event commemorates the Second Annual Great American Cleanup Pikes Peak Partners.

South Suburban Parks Foundation is rallying troops to help beautify the South Platte River Trail west of Breckenridge Brewery in Littleton. Volunteers should wear long pants, closed shoes and sunscreen. Bring gloves and water bottles. We’ll provide the trash bags! All volunteers will receive 20 percent off food and beverages at the brewery’s Farm restaurant on Saturday.
