Denver Film Society put the finishing touches on its this week, adding an extra movie and detailing the stand-ups and musical acts that will introduce each screening at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
“10 Things I Hate About You,” the 1999 teen comedy that adapts Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” will screen on June 4 — in between the season’s opening film, Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (May 15) and its June 11 offering, Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”
Each screening pairs a film with Colorado bands and a comedian. This year’s musical highlights include Denver bands Wildermiss, Oko Tygra, Flaural, RL Cole & the Hell You Say, Morning Bear, Retrofette and others.
On the comedy side, a who’s-who of Front Range stand-ups will introduce and perform at each show, including Josh Blue (who appeared last week on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”), Pussy Bros. troupe member Janae Burris, longtime Denver comic and former “Too Much Fun” co-host Nathan Lund, Jodee Champion, Elliot Woolsey, Mike Stanley and recent ex-pat Troy Walker, dropping in from Los Angeles.
The outdoor film screenings aren’t relegated to Red Rocks, however. In addition to Film on the Rocks, the Denver Film Society is again partnering with the Denver Center for the Performing Arts for its Sunset Cinema series.
Since Anderson’s “Grand Budapest” was the public-poll winner for Film on the Rocks, DFS has decided to program the rest of the director’s catalog for the outdoor series, which takes place at the Denver Performing Arts Complex downtown through a partnership with Denver Arts & Venues and The Next Stage NOW.
The films are set: “Moonrise Kingom,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox,” “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou” and “The Royal Tenenbaums.” But specific dates for the series, which runs mid-June through August, are yet to come.
Gates for each Red Rocks show open at 6:30 p.m., with a 7 p.m. show time.General admission tickets are $15 and currently on sale. Tickets and additional information can be found at.
