West Metro Fire Rescue put out a 2-acre grass fire Wednesday at West Cedar Drive and South Zinnia Way in Lakewood, West Metro spokeswoman Ronda Scholting said.

Firefighters back-burned some spots on one side of the blaze, eliminating vegetation that could fuel the fire.

The fire, in the Green Mountain area, was visible from downtown Denver. No evacuations were ordered, and no structures were threatened.

The fire, close to Red Rocks Community College, burned near an apartment complex, but there “is a lot of cement” surrounding the building, she said.  A water tower and garage are also nearby.

Investigators said the cause of the fire is suspicious and likely was “human caused.”

The fire was out about 4 p.m., and firefighters mopped up for about two more hours.

Counting Wednesday’s fire, there have been at least eight since November.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
