The pilot of a single-engine plane told federal investigators she was trying to stop for fuel in Salida en route to Denver when the aircraft’s engine suddenly lost power.

Serena Welcher, 34, of Page, Ariz., told the National Transportation Safety Board that she was on final approach to Harriet Alexander Field Airport in Salida when she had to make a forced landing in a field. The plane hit a fence and irrigation equipment and was substantially damaged.

The NTSB, in a preliminary report, said Welcher was delivering the plane — a Cessna 210 — to a new owner in Denver.

Welcher was not hurt. She had taken off from Page Municipal Airport in Arizona.

The Cessna, according to Federal Aviation Administration records, is registered to a man in Moab, Utah.

The plane crashed about 7:15 p.m. on April 19 about a quarter-mile north of Harriet Alexander Field.
