Longmont’s City Council gave initial approval Tuesday night to an ordinance that would prohibit people from standing or sitting on medians that officials have deemed to be unsafe.

The vote was unanimous, and the council did not discuss the proposal.

The ban — if it gets final council approval after a public hearing and final council action scheduled for May 9 — would amend the  Longmont Municipal Code’s provisions about traffic medians. .

The ordinance prohibits anyone — whether they are soliciting contributions, advertising businesses, holding up protest signs or just standing there — “to access, or occupy, congregate or assemble” on the medians at nine intersections city staff has identified as being unsafe for pedestrian use.
