Colorado State Patrol Trooper Nate Reid said a Toyota Scion driven by Emilio Clavel-Fuentes, 51, of Thornton, crashed into another car on North Foothills Highway near Violet Avenue at 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Two witnesses, Anthony Short, 25, and Sona Shrestha, 22, both of Boulder, stopped to help Clavel-Fuentes after his car wound up in the westbound lane. Details of the first crash were unclear, Reid said.
While that was happening, a 1990 Mercedes-Benz driven by Jose Hernandez-Altamira, 23, crashed into the rear of Clavel-Fuentes’ car, and struck Short and Shrestha as well, Reid said.
Reid said Clavel-Fuentes, Short and Shrestha all were taken to Boulder Community Health’s Foothills Hospital with serious injuries. According to an arrest affidavit, Short’s injuries are life-threatening.
Investigators suspect that alcohol played a factor in both crashes.
