COMMERCE CITY — was one of the best goalkeepers in MLS last year when he was replaced in the middle of the season by U.S. national team icon . He was in goal for Colorado’s only win this season, the opener when Howard was recovering from injury. He was back in goal during Howard’s recent three-game disciplinary suspension and was honored for making the league’s save of the week in two of those games.

But Howard returned last week in the team’s 1-0 home loss to Vancouver and MacMath is back on the bench.

“Itap tough,” MacMath said. “I thought I showed well in the three games I played. Unfortunately, they were three losses. But I always knew once the suspension was over that I was going to head back behind Tim. Then itap just back to the normal grind of trying to get better each day.”

MacMath is clearly good enough to be a starter in the league, which means he has trade value, but it’s good for the Rapids to have a quality backup especially given that Howard is bound to miss games on national team duty.

“I’m happy here in Colorado,” MacMath said. “I love this team, I love the coaching staff, love my teammates. We’re going through a little bit of a rough patch, but we’re sticking together and hoping to turn this around. I want to be a part of that.”
