Re: “” April 28 news story.
This article left me wondering about my church. I have been a member of the United Methodist Church for most of my adult life. I was attracted to the church because I believe in their founding principles, which have relevance for me. Their Social Principles describe the church as a caring community, one that “provides for the potential for nurturing human beings into the fullness of their humanity” and also “recognizes that sexuality is God’s gift to all persons and that “homosexual persons are individuals of sacred worth.”
So that is why I’m so confused now about the “church law” that accepts our service (and contributions and membership), and is open to all regardless of their background, income level or sexual orientation, but now rejects someone in a leadership position who is openly gay.
Other main line religions — Presbyterians and Lutherans, for example — reject this litmus test for their leaders. Whatap wrong with the United Methodist hierarchy? I’m angry and confused.
