Former Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation James Comey testifies in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee during an oversight hearing on the FBI on Capitol Hill May 3, 2017 in Washington, D.C.

Re: “” May 9 news story.

I write to express my grave concern about the firing of the director of the FBI, James Comey. In his short tenure, President Donald Trump has fired at least three high-profile law enforcement officials investigating collusion between Trump officials and Russia. First it was Sally Yates, then Preet Bharara and now Comey. How do you say “cover up” in Russian?

History shows us that when leaders upset the balance of power, fire or imprison critics, berate judges and make their own rules, the end result is horrific for the people. I would prefer not to go down this dark, fascist path. We need to unite, fight and act quickly.

If you need more evidence that President Donald Trump is unbalanced, the firing of James Comey is it. Initially, he would have had us believe that he fired Comey because he mishandled Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server. But that was obviously bogus since Trump praised Comey for that action during the campaign.

No, the real reason he fired Comey is that Comey was not a yes-man for Trump. And we know from “The Apprentice” what happens to people when they don’t kowtow to Trump’s wishes— he fires them. And the elephant in the room is that Trump is afraid of what the FBI may find as they dig into his ties to Russia. We need an independent prosecutor, outside Trump’s reach.

Occam’s razor posits that, if one is faced with multiple explanations for the same phenomenon, the simplest explanation is usually the correct one. Applied to the James Comey firing, the simplest explanation is that the FBI investigation was coming uncomfortably close to proving complicity between Donald Trump’s team and Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Imagine if Hillary Clinton had won the election amid allegations that her campaign colluded with a foreign power hostile not only to the United States, but to the idea of democracy itself. And then stonewalled and obstructed any possible investigation. And then fired the head of the FBI and listed numerous contradictory reasons for doing so, none of which made any sense.

Republicans would be calling for her head. Thatap exactly how the president has behaved. Yet Republicans won’t support an independent investigation. Why?

To anybody with half a brain, itap as plain as the nose on my face why the president fired James Comey: to derail the investigation into collusion between the administration and Vladimir Putin. Thatap obviously why Republicans continue to block an investigation. When will they start putting their country ahead of their party?

On the debate regarding the president and the FBI director, I believe there was clear evidence of not acting within the limits of his position. I agree that he behaved in a self-serving and grandstanding manner, he misspoke and misled on more than oneoccasion, he tried to exercise power that exceeded his authority, and he clearly lost the trust and confidence of everyone. Oh wait —which of these twomen are we still talking about?

Former FBI Director James Comey told members of Congress that he felt “mildly nauseous” to thinkhe might have tipped the election outcome in favor of Donald Trump. Now that President Trumphas fired him, I suspect Comey is feeling sick to his stomach.
