Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon has three assists as Canada routs Norway

Canadians, with spot in quarterfinals clinched, are 5-0-1 with one game remaining in group play

Avalanche center had three assists in Canada’s 5-0 win over Norway at the world championships Monday in Paris, giving him five goals and six assists in six games at the tournament.

St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko scored twice for the Canadians, and Ryan O’Reilly, Mark Scheifele and Brayden Schenn had the other goals. Colorado center didn’t hit the scoresheet and remained without a point in Group B play.

Chad Johnson, alternating with Colorado’s in the Canada net in the tournament, got the start and had to make only 10 saves — including two in the second period and none in the third — in the shutout.

After Monday’s games were completed, MacKinnon was in a three-way tie for second in tournament scoring. Russia’s Artemi Panarin (3 goals, 10 assists) leads with 13 points. Two other Russians, Nickita Kucherov (5-6) and Vadim Shipachyov (2-9), are deadlocked with MacKinnon at 11 points.

In other games of the final day of group competition Tuesday, Avalanche center J.T. Compher and the United States  (5-1) will face Russia; and Sweden (4-1-1), with Colorado forwards and , will meet Slovakia.

The tournament quarterfinals — with the top four teams from each of the eight-team groups — are Thursday at both sites, the semifinals are Saturday and the medal games Sunday, all in Cologne.
