Work to mitigate rock slides along a stretch of I-70 west of Idaho Springs Tuesday will result in traffic delays, and the highway will be shut down for about 20 minutes.

The highway will close at Fall River Road and at Dumont for 20 minutes between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. as crews blast unstable rock along and above the highway, according to the state Department of Transportation. The safety measure will close the highway in both directions.

The 20-minute closure could result in delays up to an hour. Frontage roads near the blasting site also will be closed.

The work is necessary to reduce the risk of rock slides in the area. Work is scheduled to continue through June. Crews will be blasting rock about once a week.
