Hector Santana-Arreola, 39, had pulled a knife on Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents June 9 before , grazing his head.
Santana-Arreola, who was wanted on two outstanding warrants and is a previously deported felon, suffered a superficial wound and survived, according to arrest documents from the Denver Police Department. He has been arrested on charges of first-degree assault.
Around 8:45 a.m. June 9, ICE agents were surveilling Santana-Arreola’s home on Albrook Drive near Peoria Street. The agents followed him to Huron Street and Louisiana Avenue, where they attempted to pull him over.
Santana-Arreola kept driving. When he eventually stopped, he took off running while holding a weapon described as either a folding knife or a box cutter, according to police documents. The agents followed him for a block before Santana-Arreola turned around aggressively with the knife in his hand.
Both agents said they were afraid that he would use the knife against them, the documents said. One agent pulled his gun and fired at Santana-Arreola.
Santana-Arreola told police that he knew running from the agents was wrong. He said he pulled the knife out of his pocket just before being shot. But he said he did so only at the direction of the officers and did not plan to attack them
