An Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputy and a state trooper were involved in a head-on collision Saturday evening near Manila Road and 48th Avenue near Watkins.

Both officers were injured and taken to area hospitals, according to tweets from law enforcement. News helicopter photos of the crash showed the deputy’s SUV with a smashed front end and the trooper’s vehicle with its roof sheered off. Debris from the vehicle lay nearby on the gravel road where the vehicles crashed into each other.

The extent of the injuries of the officers involved was not yet known, though the state patrol reported that the trooper was communicating with emergency responders. Arapahoe County reported that its deputy was in serious but stable condition Saturday night.

The Colorado State Patrol was investigating the cause of the crash, which happened about 5:30 p.m.
