Cynthia and Mike Coffman have filed for divorce after 12 years of marriage

The Republican couple say they “will remain each other’s strongest supporters”

Republican power couple Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman and U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman filed for divorce over the weekend, splitting of marriage.

“After much soul-searching we have made the painful decision to get a divorce,” the former couple said in a written statement released by a spokeswoman. “This has been a difficult choice for both of us and we ask our friends and supporters for their understanding. We have a great deal of respect for each other and will remain each other’s strongest supporters in whatever we do in our continued service to the people of Colorado.”

The couple shared a golden retriever — — who became a mainstay in the state treasurer’s office when Mike Coffman held the post overseeing the state’s taxpayer dollars. When Mike and Cynthia married and he deployed, Cynthia continued to bring the dog to work at the treasurer’s office.

Mike Coffman represents Aurora in the U.S. House. Cynthia Coffman was elected attorney general in 2014 and has been rumored to be weighing a 2018 run for governor.

Both Cynthia Coffman and Mike Coffman are facing re-election next year.

A spokeswoman for the pair did not say where the divorce petition was filed.
