Spotlight on Romain Alessandrini: A Frenchman who is the latest “designated player” to star for the Galaxy, Alessandrini left Olympique de Marseille in January to sign with Los Angeles and he has been one of the best players in MLS this season. Playing the No. 10 position, he has seven goals and seven assists in 14 games. He leads the league in away goals (five).
Galaxy: Forward Giovani dos Santos is third in all-star voting behind Sebastian Giovinco (Toronto FC) and David Villa (New York City FC). … Galaxy (5-5-4) is unbeaten in its last seven games and has the best road record in the league (4-2-1). … Midfielder Jermaine Jones, who starred for the Rapids last season when he was healthy, has been out since May with an MCL knee strain. … Coach Bruce Arena left the Galaxy after last season and has been replaced by Curt Onalfo.
Rapids: This is Colorado’s first game against Los Angeles since the Rapids defeated L.A. in the Western Conference finals last November via penalty kicks. … The Rapids spent most of this season in the basement of the conference but now stand second-to-last with a two-point advantage over Minnesota, which has played one more game. … The center back position was bolstered last week in a 2-1 win over Portland with the return of Axel Sjoberg, and in that game rookie Kortne Ford had one of his best performances. … Striker Alan Gordon now has scored 14 of his 54 career goals in the 80th minute or later. In the past two league games, he scored game-winners late, scoring twice on two shots on goal in only 18 minutes of action.
