
Voni Faus was on a roller coaster of emotions.

The Niwot resident woke up early Thursday morning because her 15-year-old dachshund, Bitz, was yelping. When she got up to check what was wrong, she found Bitz in a crumpled heap on the floor, unable to stand.
She and her husband rushed Bitz to an emergency veterinarian, who told them it was likely a herniated disc, because dachshunds are known to have back problems.
Faus could either choose to get Bitz an MRI and surgery, or go home with pain pills and hope her dog made a miracle recovery.
She was devastated and felt sure that Bitz would have to be euthanized, a double blow to the family because Bitz’s sister died earlier this year.
But then, a small discovery prolonged Bitz’s life.
